yes. it is always best to unplug your computer from the mains, as well as your printer, scanner, and etc.

also, always unplug your router/modem etc from your phone and mains. BT lines start at the top of your house and enter at the bottom, so there is always the high risk lightning could strike it.

ntl: ppl aren't as bad as the cables are under the ground.

Surge protectors are good, but in a thunderstorm with the old bad lightning, switch off I would - better safe than sorry :-)

If you have no surge protection, yes. Also, disconnect your modem/router. I was on internet via modem when there was a storm nearby. There was a lightning strike somewhere and it send enough power down the phone line to blow up my modem. I opened up the case and there was the main chip of the modem, embedded into my case in a thousand pieces. Could have been worse, though!!

I have never heard such a huge bang 9that was not caused by guns/explosives.

even if you have a surge protector....you should unplug your PC during a thunderstorm. I have one of the most expensive and rugged surge protectors on the market, it cost me £80 but it clearly says in the booklet that NO surge protector can survive a lightening strike to your mains.

Yes. The other day there was a storm where my sister lives. Lightening struck and sparks came in from all of her outlets and screwed most of her appliances. Her computer too. Maybe she didn't have a surge protector. Not sure.

You should unplug it even if you have a surge protector, as they can only protect up to a certain voltage; also unplug your telephone line as lightening can travel down this too.
