Believe it or not, one of the safest places to be when lightning strikes is a car or other motor vehicle, because the rubber tires, being non-conductive, tend to act as a repellant against the electrical discharge.

inside, away from windows, away from electrical outlets, and not in the shower, not on the phone, not on the computer. Basement if you got one.
If you're outside, stay away from trees, turn your phone off, stay away from tall objects. Get inside a car and close the door. If you're in a field, lie down, find a gully somewhere... Lightning will strike the tallest grounded object, and you don't want that object to be YOU. You can also feel when lightning is about to strike, the hairs on your neck and arm will tend to stand up (you do not always feel this, and it does not always lead to a lightning strike).

if you are home in your basement or room without windows like a bathroom, away from the fixtures with water off. if you are not at home in a car or in the centre of the mall away from the windows.
always away from trees. always away from the tallest thing in the area. if you get stuck in an open field or something lie down on the ground. preferably in a ditch.
stay off the phone. it is NOT an old wives tale that lightening travels through the phone wires. it happens. turn off your computer. if the power goes off and then surges you can lose your computer.

In a high rise building because most of these buildings have conductor rod that channel lightning to the ground away from you.

In most cases...inside your home. Houses are usually well grounded by virtue of the plumbing and usually at least one grounding rod. Stay away from windows...don't talk on hard phone lines..turn your computer off... and no baths or showers.
