To hit an affective slice shot, open the racket face, so when the ball hits it backspin will be applied and will cause the opponent to become off balance and hit a weak shot which will give you the oppurtunity to hit a winner. I find back hand slices are more affective then forehand. A slice should be kept low by the opponents feet. You will find as you progress in your tennis career this will be a highly affective shot in the game. Once you get a good slice you should try to strategize when to use it in a competitive match.

The slice is most often used by a one hander. In order to perform a slice you need to use a continental grip on your backhand side. You start with the racquet up high and glide the racquet threw the ball with the racquet ending up low. Its hard to explain but someone should be able to show you quite easily.

You actually want to keep the racquet face square to the ball until you make contact, which is when you cut under it slightly.

You open your racket face to make a spin so that your opponent can't return your ball because they lose they're balance.
