Just hang in there... I think the real question is (and just according to your answer "wouldn't we all like to know" to the question "what is the answer to life") that you have to be convinced that this is what you want to do in life. I am 28 and it is just getting better and better. I spent years and years practicing the guitar, believing I could make it. If you have any doubts... no way you can make it. You can only do music by answering that question: why am I making music. If the answer is: because it is the only thing I am meant to do... there you go. I've been struggling for my music but it's worth it. If you make it, you'll be able to travel, play, meet people... Also you should check support from the Art Council of Canada http://www.canadacouncil.ca/default.htm and there's an art council for Manitoba http://www.artscouncil.mb.ca/. I got several grants from the Arts councils of Quebec and Canada and it allowed me to study in NYC, England, San Francisco, to make recording (I have 5 Cd's on labels today), and they also can give you money for traveling. There's not one way to make it... of course networking helps and if you are a cool casual person people will like to play with you... and that helps. People will always choose the people they are having the most fun to play with over the "better" players.
Good luck
PS: oh yeah: go to school! Get knowledge, study contemporary music, jazz, pop...

I'm not in the same boat, but my brother was. He is a very talented drummer and is well known in these parts. When he realized the gigs weren't coming in as often as he hoped, he went to college, and is almost done. He needed something to fall back on just in case.
From watching him, and other artists, here's what I suggest...
*As cliche as it sounds, NETWORK! The more people you know in that business, the more chance you have of a gig. I suggest checking out your local papers for musicians/singers wanted, or interest groups for musicians/songwriters/etc.
*Get a job, or go to school in the meantime. My brother not only went to school, but he got a really sweet job as a drumming instructor for several local groups. The pay is great and he loves it. Giving lessons is a really easy way to make some money. I know several people who have completed music degrees, and they now work all over the world for different symphony orchestras. A friend of mine actually wrote a whole musical production for our local symphony orchestra. It's not solo, but you make some seriously good connections.
*Think about starting with a band. More people will be interested in seeing a band at a club than just one person. Your name will become more recognized, and your network will get bigger.
*Play any and all gigs you can for now. This includes bar mitzvas, etc. Exposure in any form gets you noticed.
I hope this helped and good luck!

oh yes. i'm an aspiring singer and dancer and when i think of "starting out" trying to make it as a solo artist it scares me to death but i get this odd rush of excitment that i've never felt before.(only when i think about it ofcoarse) my advice to you is.................let it all flow. in the words of stevie wonder "don't you worry bout a thing." cause with me if i think about how good it'll feel when i get there knowing that i've worked hard for it, it's all worth the tears, the embarresment, the sweat, and everything else that i'm gonna have to go through to make me dream of becomeing an singer and dancer come true. just make a home demo tape of your work and send it in to a recording company and if they turn you down, ....don't give up.

If you're starving, you should consider getting some education and experience in a real job, unless you plan to starve until you die.

I'm in a band, just play it by ear. Get a gig whenever you can and who knows? you may get a recording deal.
