We're buying a second hand fridge and I want it to be as clean as new.

Those natural orange solvent based cleansers have always seemed to work well on odor, and they don't smell overpoweringly of chemicals. Make sure you rinse all surfaces well with clean water after using it and before placing food inside. I would make sure that the fridge is defrosted before cleaning it also - stray ice or frost always seem to be odor magnets.

After cleaning it, I would put a small opened container of baking soda in the refrigerator and freezer sections to trap any smells that might be lingering in the circulator fan.

If something really horrible happened in the fridge - Hurricane Katrina scale horrible where food was left to rot inside and the fridge was without power for an extended period of time - you may not be able to get all the smell out. Hopefully this is just a standard second-hand fridge that had reasonably diligent owners.

Good luck.

Keeping an open container of baking soda in the frigerator is the usual way to get bad odors absorbed and eliminated as they arise. Of course you don't want to let food rot in the frig either so make sure you buy no more than you consume and throw out stuff that spoils. It's also a good idea to clean out the frig often, particularly the space below the bottom drawers. Liquids can accumulate here and well...... After cleaning the surfaces of the inside of the frig with clean soapy water, sanitize with a solution of bleach and water. A tablespoon of bleach plus a gallon of water is strong enough.

Wash thoroughly with Colrox, followed by Bon Ami scrubdown (catch the backside of the door retainer bars!), take out the shelves and drawers and do the same to them, hose out the interrior after this, wash with a mild soap and very hot water and let sun-dry. Then spray lightly with a disinfectant spray, let air a day to get rid of the spray's light smell and that's it!! You should thoroughly clean your refri (turned off) at least once a year, never allow food to go moldy or spoil before removal and trashing, and always keep a slightly opened box of baking soda open in the back (replace every three months.)

Clean it with Mr. Clean and then put an Arm and Hammer Baking soda box in, it absorbs odors.

As stated, baking soda. But when you get it just wipe it down with a bleach/water mixture. That should clean it.. and leave it open for a while. After, go with the baking soda.
