someone has wi-fi in my apartment complex. its called 2wire157 is there anyway to maybe connect into it or what? Is it a crime to hack it or what? Also like t-mobile at starbucks is it able to be used without paying for it?

It is not illegal to intercept anything over the air. It is only illegal to record voice conversations.

Yes, it *is* a crime to hack into it, and law enforcement is fast coming up to speed on how to track you down.

Open wi-fi at a Starbucks is usually different, in that (a) they usually do not have an SSID set (like your apartment example has an SSID of 2wire157), and they have 'Free wi-fi' signs on the wall. If there's a "Free wireless" sign, that's pretty much a guarantee of what the lawyers call 'estoppel' (meaning they *said* it was OK, and they're not allowed to go back on it). However, please be nice to all of us security people on the Net and only use it for legal purposes... :)
