You want best, or do you want cheapest? They aren't the same.

Cheap and best don't belong in the same sentence. You get what you pay for. Cheaper chemicals usually are more dilute and have undesirable filler material added to them, like additional calcium in granular shocks or watered down algacides.
I'll tell you what you need to have on hand, but it's up to you to decide how much you're willing to pay for them.
1/Stabilized chlorine tabs
2/Shock (your choice here many types and cost)
3/Muriactic acid
4/An algacide for emergencies( better to have it now, rather than 24 hours after you see a problem)
5/ Soda ash
6/ A proper test kit that measures total alkalinity, Ph, Cl.
That's the basics.

bentonite..... what kind of pool? bentonite - I've been trying to remember the name of that for ages - is a clay. You dissolve it in water and all the crap in your pool sticks to it and it sinks to the bottom - leaving your pool nice and clean. It will even fix a hole in the bottom a of a pool with a plastic liner. they use it to clear vegetarian wine. I mention that in case the person who asked about that earlier reads this question. Wine is usually cleared with goo from the bladder of a fish. Are you having fish in your pool?

We use household bleach, just the regular kind not thickened or scented and Twenty-Mule-Team Borax. Both from Walmart. Trial and error with adding to start with but now we have it down to fine art!

Gasoline costs around $3.00 per gallon from any gas station. It will kill most anything.
