I made a waterwheel out of small pieces of wood (slats from an old arbor) and positioned it with rocks in the brook running through the woods on our land. We dammed up the brook and made a swimming hole. I always liked to "make" landscapes by taking a stone and pretend it was a house and landscape the 'garden' with anything I could find to represent a 'tree' 'flowers' 'yard furniture', and I'd make 'burmes' (small hilly areas) to put interest in the 'scapes'. If kids would use their imaginations today like we did instead of relying on Ipods, computers, video games and cell phones so much, they might find out what 'really' interests them and get into something they 'really' like. I now do landscape designs for businesses and residents.

I used to do the cards-in-the-spokes thing to my bike. I also would take coffee cans, turn them open side down, poke holes on each side close to the closed end, then run a long length of baling twine through the holes to form a loop. I'd walk with the loops in my hands to hold the closed can ends to the bottoms of my shoes. Like stilts. Used the lids of peanut butter jars and coffee cans as Frisbees, before the real ones were out. Whistles too, out of the metal straps that were in the cardboard used at the railroad. And any well shaped stick worked as a gun for fighting whatever threat happened to be in the area.

I actually did (sort of) make my own toys when I was young. I would squirrel away small boxes, bathroom tissue and paper towel tubes. With those thing, glue and scotch tape, I would make castles with multiple rooms, draw-bridges, secret passage entrances, and trap doors. These cardboard creations would occupy me for hours, both making them and playing with them.
