Love is the typical answer but thats probably from people who have never actually been married. Friendship is absolutely necessary because you won't spend the rest of your life in some frenzy that is chemically induced by your brain, you will spend a majority of the time just hanging out, taking care of day to day issues in your life and dealing with problems. You need to have the same goals in life as that person and you need to be willing and able to support theirs. You need to respect them. You need to have similar moral expectations and you need to be able to communicate with them effectively. Here are some things to thing about when considering marriage....

Consider it when you have been together long enough to be out of the infatuation stage (and this can be a couple of years). When you have discussed ALL the issues involved in life after the wedding like finances, division of household labor, children, in laws, where to live, jobs, time away with friends, and a million other things you haven't thought of. After all of that you consider each part of the vows, and what you consider is the difficult side of them, anybody can be happy when things are going well so,

richer or poorer....still want to be with him or her in a shack with crackers ala peanut butter for dinner?

sickness and health...he/she develops a chronic physical or mental illness and can't get around and can't work, still want to be with him/her?

better or worse...he/she's in a car accident and you have to spend the rest of your life feeding them and changing their diapers, still want to be married?

keep yourself only to him/her, can you REALLY only have sex with only that person until you die?

THIS is what marriage is, not a fairy tale where everything goes well everyday, the one guarantee you have is that things WILL go wrong. Remember, you answer all these questions after you have passed infatuation, after you know what their bad points are (yes they have some and so do you) and still consider it anyway.

If you think you are up for all of this then maybe you should think about it.

The only reason to marry someone is if you love them enough to want to spend the rest of your life with them.

According to Paul the apostle you should get married if you can not control your lust. But I think my marriage is a true gift. I married one of my best friends. We have grown into adults together, we share everything in our lives. We love each other in sickness and health, through the good times and bad, through the gas and morning breath!!

The only "right" reason is love and wanting to spend you life with that person. Any other reason (pregnant, sick, lonely) will result in a terrible marriage which will ultimately end in divorce.

Ah......you love them for who they are. You accept them for who they are. You are walking on the same life path. You have mutual goals about your future. And you NEVER think that you are going to change them to suit your needs!!!!
