When we could simply go to Canada and get all the oil & fresh water we need. Those Canadians have 1/5 th of the planets fresh water. We could simply take their oil, water and lumber and our natural resource problem would be fixed.

Because there just isn't enough in Canada to fuel the entire North American continent. The Middle East region is full of oil and refineries and has the capabilities to support the entire world. Alberta, Canada can't even fuel the country. People in Ontario rely on oil coming in from the there as well as the Middle East and US. Compare these two links.
Oh, and you're more than welcome to come over and try to take our oil and fresh water. Who had the favourable ruling in the last lumber dispute again? WE DID.

Canada is a top 5 producer of oil for the US. Only one or two countries in the middle east are top 20 suppliers. Saudi and Iran. As far as the lumber resources, much of the forestry in Canada is some of the oldest in the world. Much of it is cut and managed for regrowth, but what is not is very important to Canadians and Envrionmentalists.

Here's where I'm confused, sometimes the Prez says we need to stop depending on foreign oil, then he'll say that only 1/3 of our oil comes from import and the rest comes from within the U.S. Which is it?
Why do we need fresh water? Is there a water crisis I haven't heard about?

On a serious note, the price of oil has risen to the a level that is now economically justifiable to extract oil from Canada's Tar Sands.

There are a lot of complicated reasons for buying from the middle east but my question is why go elsewhere for oil period when we have enough reserves in the US to last us hundreds of years...US supports a lot of countries financially and this is one example of how we support the middle east.

We get a lot of our oil from Venezuela, who now says they hate us. Also, we could get our oil from Alaska, but heaven forbid we ruin some country side that no one will ever see.
