In the western world women use make up to make themselves look more attractive. Its an evolutionary way of making us feel more attractive to potential mates. Have you ever noticed that women wear less make up when they are older etc. Its because they no longer have to be attractive as they have already passed on their genes to the next generation.
In Africa, the wearing of make up is much more prevalent- think of all the dancing and body paints.

They often have to.. society socialises women into thinking pretty/attractive is good and ugly is bad.. girls toys are usually about being pretty (a decoration) or being a carer (like dolls)
Fairy stories, Cinderella for example, ugly sisters = bad, yet when Cinderella is corrected by the Godmother the prince falls for her they marry and live happy ever after.. Ugly Duckling, Beauty and the Beast etc all carry on the myth
Then there is all the exposure to stunning celebs and the ads which all carry the same message - you are NOT ok as you are.
Women are profoundly insecure and most women feel inherently ugly (compared to the perfect images around them) and so use make-up to correct those 'imperfections'..
Even if a very strong woman was to not do this chances are she would be subject (unless she was naturally stunning - which most are not.. how many celebs go out with zip on?) to ridicule and there would be negative consequences..
Celebs are derided when they let their guard slip..
Much of make-up is enhancing the innate sex cues such as blusher to mimic sexual arousal etc so it could all stem from biological origins.. make-up is a way to attain/retain a man and also to get the attention of otherwise uninterested males..
It is a curious phenomenon.. one that was viewed in ancient Egypt too and until women are released from the burden of always having to aspire to be exceptionally young/pretty/decorative all the time via cultural pressure then it is one that will continue.
We live in a society which reserves the right to humiliate a woman considered unattractive and plain - that is why women use it.
That is why it makes them feel better - if they lived on a dessert island or when they close their door at night - most don't bother.

The purpose of make-up is to enhance your beauty, but a lot of women just over do it... making themselves look like a clown.

It enhances their appearance and therefore their self esteem. Unless, they use too much, then it makes them look like hookers but they have a better sex life. But men use things to enhance their appearance - even paying silly prices for designer underwear and thongs that are rarely seen. Thankfully.....

several reasons for this i think
1) to attract the opposite sex
2) to make themselves feel good about themselves
3) to cover up blemishes when they stand out
4) to help you feel good about yourself when you are low
5) to have girly sleepovers and muck about with it
6) to closen the mother and child bond when the mother teaches the child how to apply make-up
7) to help men feel like women if they are that way inclined

They think they're ugly without it and thus need all that gunk to be pretty. It's stupid. And it's sad b/c all that gunk they do wear, just makes their skin 3x worse as they get older.

Good make-up includes good skin care. That is important for healthy skin. It is part of good grooming.
