To expound on shmifty_14's answer- there are many bulletin boards or forums where people with common interests go to exchange ideas and find answers to their problems. There are diet forums, car forums, ever Southern Living magazine has a forum. When someone posts a topic or question, and people subsequently repond, it's known as the "thread".

A thread is a topic of discussion. For example when you reply to an email and the send replies back, this is called an email thread.

It's like when someone posts a comment/concern/question, whatever, and millions of people keep replying to the original post until the end of time.
