According to the BT call charge book, the calls to 0845 numbers are charged at 3.95p per minute, Monday to Friday 1.49 p per minute after 6 PM , and1.00p per minute weekend ,ie midnight Friday to midnight Sunday.So it's BTwhat gets the dosh !

The company you ring is not going to make a penny more by keeping you on hold. They do not receive any of the income from the call on an 0845 number.
So, by holding you online for longer than necessary they fail to make a sale or charge you for services rendered they are actually losing money.
This answer relates purely on 0845, this is the local call rate, - for other numbers the reverse is certainly true.
