car will only shift if you start in L1 and manually shift the gears yes it is an automatic

Either it has a bad modulator valve or internal pump may be weak.

Well just saying you have a Pontiac does not really help much with no year or type of transmission. Hell just a year and type of car would help narrow down possible problems other than that its just speculation on answers you get.

here is something that is cheap and should make some since to you it's really simple to do change the trans. filter when starts getting plug up the gears start to acting up if that not it check the erg valve or vacuum lines.

My Bentley Arnage had some transmission trouble. It's best just to replace the whole unit.

I got it in blue this time...

Probably its had it but check your transmission fluid w/engine running in park or neutral.

Sounds like the auto valve body computer is messed. you'll need to take it to somebody you trust.

it is your modulator valve it is on the side of the tranny with a vacume lin in it

probably modulator valve inside of tranny!
