A couple basic tips:

Eat from the outside in. The forks furthest away from the plate get used first. So, in a typical restaurant, you may have just two forks. The one furthest away is your salad fork, because that comes first. By the way, the salad fork is also smaller.

Unless you're at a seafood restaurant, you'll probably just have two forks.

As far as knives go, it's pretty obvious. The rounded one is your butter knife, the serrated one is your steak knife.

For spoons, the big concave one is your soup spoon. The smallish one above your plate is your dessert spoon.

Remember, when you're finished using your utensils for each dish, place them in the 10 and 5 position -- the tips pointing toward 10:00, the ends toward 5:00 to let the waiter know you are finished.

Happy eating.

Generally if you are eating several courses you would start on the outside and work your way in. If you have several knives such as for fish or steak and not using one the waiter will remove it. Sometimes the dessert spoon will be at the top of the plate with a fork. The spoon to the right of your plate is for soup. Your side plate will be on your left and your napkin in a ring in front of you. You may have various glasses in front of you of different shapes. Do not touch them. Let the waiter pour your choice of drink into the appropriate glass. If you ordered a bottle or carafe use a tall glass for white wine, rounded one for red and one on a stem for liqueurs or port and sherry. Overall do not worry if you use the wrong ones. No-one will mind. It's just that the restaurant, if it's a good one, is simply providing you with all the tools you need to eat the meal. As a matter of courtesy never smoke at a dining table. It is offensive and unhygienic. Most restaurants ban or discourage it anyway.

A quick rule of thumb is to work your way from outside to inside. In other words, the little fork on the outside is the salad fork. The silverware should coincide with the courses offered. Good luck! For comfort, remember that in a social situation most people don't really know what they're doing either!!

You start on the outside of the set before you order. If you are not having some early starters, the waiter should remove the knives or forks for those courses. So that when your first course is served, you use the knife and fork on the outside of the set.

As the services come, you work your way inward. Outside fork is salad fork and inside fork is meal fork. Bread knife is outside and inner knife is meal knife. Dessert fork is usually across the top of the setting.

if you are in a fancy restaurant, or at a formal dinner, always work from outside in. In a regular restaurant, they only give you one, unless you order something special like lobster or escargot that takes a special fork. If all else fails, watch others around you, and do what they are doing.

If your table is laid with different knives e.t.c you start with the outside and work your way in for each course. If you don't order a starter, the waiter should take away the starter cutler. Or if you are having something specialised such as snails, they will bring it to your table before the food is served.

you mean in a formal restaurant? when you have multiple forks and spoons, you use the ones on the outside first and with each meal, you move in towards the fork closest to your plate.

In general the utensil on the outside is the one you use first. So if you have three forks, the outside one is for your salad, the middle is for your entree and the inside one is for dessert.

The one with the three or four pointy ends = fork

The long one with a cutting edge = knife.
