My question is not whether or not I'll turn off the computer, that's staying on. But as far as the monitor goes, does anyone know if there's a difference between having a screensaver and turning it off when you're not using it?

since your using an LCD monitor, it really doesn't matter. Screensavers were designed to protect the old CRT monitors from burning an image into the screen or background. LCDs use little lights in the back of the screen to operate while CRT monitors used a floating ray of electrons. YOu can leave the computer on as usual. I personally leave my screen on during the day with a screen saver but turn it off at night when going to bed.

Screensavers were invented a long time ago because some of the first computer monitors would keep images...like, if you left it alone for a long time and then turn it off or change it, you could still see what it used to be. Monitors now dont do that so screensavers are useless besides looking pretty. So, probably save electricity and turn it off. If your only going to turn it off for 5 minutes or so just leave it on, the power it takes to turn itself on is more than most people think.

Screensaver, when you're not using the blank screensaver, was designed to keep the monitor displaying moving images so that "images" are not burned into the CRT leaving traces of images literally "burned" into the tube.

Since you are using an LCD, the screen burn-in is not a problem. The only reason to consider turning off the monitor instead of using a blank screensaver is to save energy. The difference between standby mode and turning it off in terms of electricity is minor but you'll save electricity regardless.

One more thing you might want to consider. Computer equipment usually have the greatest percentage of failure during startup. It's rare but it happens. Turning a computer on and off frequently puts the machine at a higher risk of failure.

Some things to consider but I would turn it off unless you plan on turning it on and off couple dozen times a day.

Just turn off the monitor when you are not using it. Since the screen saver does not help in increasing the life of your monitor, whereas turning it off does.
Moreover Screen savers are for a different purpose altogether.(They are used to avoid the burn-in problem in the old CRT monitors.)

Turning it off for longer periods is better. Like any electronic appliance it has a finite life. Being on with a screen saver is still using the monitor. However, turning it on and off frequently can shorten it's normal life. My recomendation is if it will be off for more than an hour or so, it is better turned off.

Turn it off, if you have an LCD the image will actuallt burn into the screen if left for an extended period of time 10min or so it will start to burn into it. If you use your computer on a regular basis dont turn it off just disconnect your internet connection but if you actuallt go a couple of days in between use then I say turn if off.

I would think that in terms of wear and tear, turning it off would be better than having power to it constantly. Also, consider the price of electricity now, and there's another reason to turn it off!

Monitors like to cool off so you should set your operating system to power off your monitor after so long.
