I started coin collecting by purchasing the yearly silver proof coins from the mint. Mostly, the last 7 years. I don't understand what the difference is between clad, proof, mint coins are. Any advice or words of wisdom is much appreciated.

I collect coins too.

Clad refers to those coins made with mostly copper but have a nickel shell. All moderns coins after 1965.

Proof is a special process of making coins that gives it a mirror quality.

Mint coins are made for collector and are the examples of circulated coins that have never been touched.

I started a blog for beginners like myself...

That wasn't enough so I bought the Red Book of US Coins by Yeoman.

That still wasn't enough so I joined this forum...

From these 3 things I now have a great base to identify and evaluate any coin or bill from the US and the world.

I collect as well. Proof coins are coins specifically distributed for coin collecting that are made to show a 3D like image on the coin. Clad coins to my understanding are your "everyday" coins that are made out of different metals. Mint coins are just coins minted for actual spending as well.

Have fun, it can be challenging and expensive but historically informative.

Don't take my word for the clad coins...I know they are multi metal coins, that is all.

Get a Blue Book or Red Book to coin collecting, there is a lot of information on coin collecting in them on what is good and what is not worth the money to spend on it. And if you are very serious about collecting, get the subscription to "Coin World"
Thanks.
