For the last 6 months - on and off when I try to connect I get a message saying: Unable to connect - check connections etc..

The router flashes, I have a faint fax like sound on my dial tone and I can't get online..

At first called the centre in India but that drove me demented having to say over and over the problem.. and being given all sorts to do to clear it.

Yet as mysteriously as it arrives - it clears itself.. I do nothing and within minutes, hours and sometimes days it is fine.

ARRRRRRRGH

i currently have a bt voyager 205 and have had no problem for 18 months, but i went to fix a friends bt broadband and their symptoms were exactly like yours,,router flashing,no connection
i can only put it down to a few reasons 1)a corrupt instalation, ring up bt and ask them to send you another instalation disc, and also see if you can upgrade to the bt home hub, this is the next-generation router and it may turn out you can upgrade to this at no extra cost.
on the installation try using a ethernet connection instead of a u.s.b as you get better bandwidth this way
also if you need to test the connection anytime ,go to command prompt in windows and type in ping www.bbc.co.uk > return this will then send 4 packets of data to the named website and will give you a average speed,it should be between 15 and 25 ms(milliseconds)
you dont have to use bt routers on a bt broadband line, you can use any router modem, belkin and netgear do some of the best and cheapest ,just install the router software the same as you would do with your bt installation disc
if you have any continuous problems please contact me with detailed info and i will try to help
good luck

Sounds like your microfilter is knackered.

I have just replaced my BT Voyager 100 ADSL modem with a new Home Hub setup. I got 2 new microfilters and I am very impressed.

I used to get terrible interference on the phone line, meaning I had unplug the modem to use the phone. No problem now.

I founf it very difficulty talking to BT Total Broadband staff.

yes i had the same problem with Tiscali broadband. The connection kept on dropping every 5 minutes. it drove me absolutely mad. I complained about it. And told them that at the end of the day, if they weren't going to improve it, I would have to change providers. They told me that due to a lot of complaints, they were going to do some work on the lines. End result, the service has not dropped once!!
