need help adding old hard drive to new computer and having new computer recognize it so I can transfer old data onto new computer. I took out the old hard drive. configured the pin settings so it is a slave and then connected it to the new computer. Now the new computer boots up off the old hard drive. It wont recognize the new hard drive. I went into the boot menu to try to get it to boot up with the new hard drive and not the old one but it wont let me. I am pulling my hair out. what to do? can someone walk me through this like I am a 4 year old?

Go to the BIOS and select the new Hard Disk as the First Boot device only if there is a OS installed on the New HD.

set the new hard drive up as master-set the old one up as a slave-place the new hard drive at the top slot and the slave under it.run the ide cable end to the top one and then the second cable to the slave.go into the bios and set up the drives so that the master is the new drive.you may even turn off the old hard drive so that it doesnt read it on start up. or just make sure it doesnt load, either way. once you have done this watch the load up screen so that in case it ask wich drive to load u select the new one. after you have this working properly i would back up the old hard drives data onto the new hard drive. be sure to partition the new hard drive eqully when you format it. if its a 100gig hd then split it 4 ways, and use ntfs.
by the way most hard drives that are masters dont usualy have to have a pin in the master slot.that caused me some problems a while back.

The question is way to complex . I would always make sure the hard disk drive was conected to the same cabe as the master. check out the IDEE channels on the motheboard. make sure the cable is hooked into the same spot.. Dont think for a moment that you use to default C: drives at the same time. There is a way that you would finde out if the cable is cable select. look for a small pin hole on it. For a fee I can take all the info off for you by sending the hard disk drive to me and I will have it all on a CD for you along with the formated hard disk drive for $80.00..

A much simpler and faster way to transfer files from an old drive to a new one is to use a program that will make an EXACT copy of your old drive.

Then, once you've made a copy of your old hard drive you can simply either erase all the files\folders or reformat it.

Here's a link to an excellent and FREE program I use all the time for just such purposes.....

Does the Master have anything to boot? If not disconnect the slave and install an OS on the new HDD. When you reconnect the slave it should boot the master (master probably does not have a boot record).

Either one of two things is going on.

(1) You have the jumper settings backwards.

(2) You have a cable select computer, that is, the position on the cable determines which one is drive C:

I would check the jumper settings first.

Contact me if you need to.

it should work with both hdd on the same cable if you set the jumpers correctly, BUT life is not fair and sh t happens ; so disconnect the cable from the cd rom and plug that into the old hdd then you should be able to access the files

Set the jumper on your NEW drive to be MASTER and it should work. The new drive should be connected to the IDE connector closest to your motherboard.
