If consumers stopped spending, completely, for any extended period of time, the economy would collapse. Manufacturing would only produce what they could export. All retail businesses, phone providers, utilities, publishers, etc. would close. The entire nation would be out of work. And, unless you could find a stream or lake to drink from, you would very shortly dehydrate and die. But, that's all that would happen.

I don't know enough about economy to say for sure, but I've pretty much stopped spending anyway, except for bills, food and gas. I'm broke!
