When I step on the gas, the a/c cuts off and then resumes when I take my foot off the gas. Had it checked out - no a/c leaks. Does anyone have any ideas?

Yes you have a vacuum leak check all vacuum hoses that are attached either to the evap core case or the a/c controller in the dash.

if the air is coming out of the defroster when you accelerate, then you have a vacuum problem. not enough storage in the reservoir or a leak. there is a black round tank that holds vacuum for times when the car doesn't produce enough vacuum to control the ducts and for safety, they switch to defrost.
