We have just installed a new very large sand paver patio. We have put a lot on sand on the top and swept it in the cracks. We also found out that using water to make it "slushy" helped it go deeper in the cracks. Now when it rains, the patio is covered in a light covering of the sand. Is this suppose to stop once the cracks get a little "outside" dirt in them or what?

Being a contractor in the paver industry, most likely you are using the wrong type of sand, you need to purchase what is called polymeric sand, it needs to be vibrated in with a tamper then swept in, then watered in.

You should have used Marble Dust.

The other thing you can do since you used sand, is spray over the paver joints a Prosoco product called Paver Kare- (Sand Joint Stabilizer. ) It acts as a sealer for the sand.

I have put in several patios and sidewalks and discovered a little secret that works real well. I mixed in redi-mix mortar mix with the sand before I filled the pavers and afterward lightly sprinkled water on top. This set the sand and never had any settling of running out problems.

Did you run a compactor over the patio after the bricks were set and the sand was swept into the cracks? It is essential to getting a good set.

From the sound of it I would say you forgot about compressing the ground with those heavy machines (tamper)?
Now the cover is just sinking in, pressing out the loose sand.
