The post of the UN Secretary General is for ten years. Kofi Annan acceded to the post after the US-imposed departure of Boutros Boutros-Ghali. He was originally thought to be just an understudy so African countries wouldn't lose their "turn" in the SG role. He has proven to be the most active SG in the history of the UN.
