If you use one to commit a crime, as far as I'm concerned they could just hang them for all I care, better than paying for their jails.
Should they be outlawed, no.

Handguns are a proven effective tool for self-defense, which is a basic human right no different than the right to freedom of religion and protection from tyranny.
Criminals will not give up their guns, period. They didn't in the UK, Australia, South Africa, or any of the other countless places where The State decided it was in the best interest of everybody if law-abiding citizens were disarmed. It also hasn't lowered crime in DC or Chicago, which have banned handguns for years.
The idea the somehow crime will drop if victims are disarmed is complete nonsense and should be ridiculed by freedom loving people everywhere. It's never worked.

Solitary would drive them crazy in 30 years, so then we'd have to foot the bill for them for life. But I think there should be stricter requirements involved when purchasing a handgun, and stricter penalties involved when using one criminally. I don't think they should be outlawed completely--that would violate the Constitution. And handguns can be useful, especially to women who live alone.

I do not think handguns should be outlawed. Florida tried that (forbidding guns) and their rate of car-jackings and robbery increased drastically.
When you outlaw guns, you make it easier for criminals to get a hold of guns and kill people who are law-abiding citizens and who can no longer defend themselves.
Guns don't kill people. Criminals do.
I think the US needs to enforce the gun laws we already have.
