I recommend the following, which won't eat up the brass or leave a white film in crevices like brasso, and is cheap and easy to use.

Mix equal parts of flour, vinegar and salt. Stir well and apply everywhere you want the brass clean. Let it sit for an hour, then wipe off; rinse if needed if it dries too thick. Follow up with a good furniture or paste wax to protect the surface and prevent new tarnish.

The best stuff made is a product call "Never-Dull". It comes in a blue metal tin. The stuff is cloth impregnated with the cleaning, polishing, and protecting solution all in one. You just pull some from the can, tear it off, and use as directed by the easy instructions. Nice, no rags to get or liquid to spill, and it works better than anything else I've ever used for brass or chrome. I was in the Navy, and this was the one and only product which kept our brass clean and shiny.

There is a liquid, which is used for cleaning silver ware. That will do the trick without damaging the brass or leaving unsightly deposits behind.
