Sounds like a "Challenge Item" at a restaurant...They will have a 72 oz Porterhouse Steak with a football sized baked potato with all of the trimmings for "free" if you can eat-it-all in one sitting. The catch is if you can't finish it you have to pay the $49.95 or whatever. I've seen it with monster portions of Pizza, Hamburgers as well...

That is not right in my opinion I know that I would never go to a restaurant like that...You should be able to eat whatever you want and stop when you want to with out being charged extra...

That happened to me once at a sushi restaurant, i guess it was an all you can eat deal so if you get too greedy and don't finish your food that's what they do. Makes sense to me sushi is expensive just to let it go to waste.

I would really like to know myself, what type of restaurants really do that? By the way, that's one the best asked questions I've ever heard of.

I've ate in restaurants for over 40 years and have never had that happen.

ah, but that challange item thing is a idea...that is the ONLY time I have ever heard of it. they can only do that if they tell you ahead of time...
