Salycic Acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid. It's main action is to clean out the pores, removing dead skin cells and excess oil. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect.

Benzoyl Peroxide actually kills the bacteria associated with acne and removes excess skin oil. It can have a drying effect, so I'd suggest buying it in a cream base.

They are both effective treatments for acne. BP works best for moderate to severe acne and Salycic Acid works best for minor to moderate acne. You can always use a combination of the two treatments for maximum results.

Good luck : )

Benzoyl peroxide is a little more hard core, and they're allowed to use more of it over the counter. But unless you really have an acne problem, don't use it. If you don't have any pimples at all, don't use either one. It'll just end up breaking you out. Salicylic (spelling?) acid is better for those that have breakouts but not acne.
