Actually, it may not have been a "star", but "The Stars". The "Wise Men" were wealthy, and most likely learned men, and astrology was a popular study.

It is theorized that Jesus was an "avatar" - in astrological terms, it means someone with a perfectly balanced birth chart - no flaws. The wise men may have calculated that the possibility of an avatar was coming, if a child was born at a specific place at a specific time. So they were following "the stars", as it were, to find the babe.

As an aside, the next possibility of an avatar being born (someone with a perfectly balanced chart) is 202-somthing...in south america if I remember right. (possibly the second coming?)
