I want to make dvds of old home movies that were put on vhs years ago. Also why won't my system let me rip dvds that are not copyright protected to my xp media system so that I can make copies of those. Do I need more hardware to rip dvds?

An alternative is to get a vhs/dvd recorder. Panasonic has some good ones. I have a dmr-es40v that dubs GREAT from vhs to dvd. I can also record directly from the tv.

I had your problems also at first, but I found that the picture and sound never matched up when it got to dvd. I was using a dazzle.

The DVDs that are NOT encoded should be able to be copied with Nero or a similar program. As far as VHS tapes go, you will need a video capture device to convert the analog signal of VHS tapes to a digital format so that they can be burned to a DVD. Either a PCI card or a USB device is required, as well as software.

For your VHS videos I have a dazzle usb capture device and it works great. It plugs in to your USB port (so you don't have to open the case). The software came with it. All you do is plug in the audio and video out cables from your vcr to the dazzle device open the software and let it copy from the device. Saves as VCD which can be copied to a CD-r disc or to DVD and will play on most newer stand alone dvd players. You should be able to rip DVD to your hard drive as long as you have a dvd rom drive.
