The Devil Rays and Rockies have never gotten it together while both the Marlins and Diamondbacks have won the World Series. I wondered if maybe they drafted poorly. Then I discovered the expansion teams drafted last in every round leading in to joining the league. The drafts were ’92 & ’93 for the Colorado Rockies and Florida Marlins. 1996, ’97, & ’98 for the Arizona Diamondbacks & Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Why did MLB do this? All other leagues Including Football and Basketball where a First Pick has immediate impact give expansion teams the first overall pick. Why does a sport where draft picks have to develop in a farm system first, not do this? These owners paid a lot of money for these Franchises, Stadiums, and Farm teams, and you give them the last pick in the draft??????

Imagine how different things might look right now. AROD a Marlin ?! Derek Jeter a Rockie?! Kris Benson & Pat Burrell Devil Rays?! Mark Mulder a Diamondback?!

If anyone knows why, please share.

Them getting "Major League Ready" talent in the expansion draft can't possibly be the reasoning behind this. All the other league's NFL, NBA, etc. Also hold an Expansion Draft. And they give expansion teams the first pick, or in the case of the NBA put them in the lottery.

The Houston Texans Got two All Pro Cornerbacks from my NY Jets along with a good young Tackle. They still got the First pick in the draft that year.

The Charlotte Bobcats also were the beneficiaries of an Expansion Draft getting Gerald Wallace and Predrag Drobnjak. They were also in the Draft Lottery getting the 4th pick and trading (Predrag Drobnjak) up to 2nd.

This slight advantage would seem even more important in baseball. Being that some draft picks can take as long as 5 years to fully develop.

It's baseball, like anything Bud Selig does is supposed to make sense?

My best guess is, since they got major league talent in the expansion draft, they would get the last picks of the amateur draft.

As a Rockies fan I wish I knew. However, the overwhelming opinion about the Rockies has always been their poor choice of pitchers coupled with the fact that Coors field is so difficult to pitch in. We've also had some great players that got burned out and stopped playing hard (Larry Walker). We're looking OK this year but still have work to do.

For how can any person critique unfinished task? I have simplest to mention that i observed it very rough hitting correct from "Granddad used to be" and i've a sense i do know wherein that is going given that i'm probably studying an excessive amount of "among" the traces.. The reasoning is that they were able to select any unprotected player from any team in the "Expansion Draft." Read the links below and maybe it will make sense. Though, to me, it still doesn't make sense.
