My husband is a veteran of the Vietnam War - a war that many vets of never get thanked for. I thank him every day for his sacrifice and dedication, going to an unpopular war because he believed in his country.

I do every November the 11 here in Canada we remember the fallen of the Korean Conflict, World War 1 and 2 and now the Conflict in Afghanstan. It is a very somber day not like your memorial day. Each year I get a poppy to remember those who have fallen in those military conflicts so I can support a needy veteran or his widow have a better life. I also talk to the veteran who sells the poppy and thank him or her for the valent job they did for Canada during those war years.

I have done this many times. The casual observer would think that II was trying to improve my own situation just a little by making the genuine comment of appreciation. Nevertheless, I meant my thanks very sincerely.

One example would be when I thanked mu father-in-law for fighting in World War II. He was an Air Force bomber pilot and flew several dozen combat missions in the war. He stayed in the Air Force after the war and I was able to attend his retirement party when he left the service with 30 years in. I was dating his daughter at the time.

I thanked him many years later, after I had spent 8 years in the U.S. Navy. We were out fishing, and having a few beers. I told him what an easy time I had in the service, and thanked him for fighting the big one. so we could all enjoy the life we have today.
