It's actually a decent deal for thee Yankees. They basically rent a 5th starter for the rest of the year. Lidle is a Free Agent after '06. They get a Right Fielder in Abreu through the end of '08, and it basically costs them the salaries of the players.

They didn't give up much by way of prospects. C.J. Henry has some potential, but since he's a shortstop and Jeter and ARod are both Yankees, I doubt he had any chance of ever playing as a Yankee in the Majors, he was destined to be dealt from the moment he was drafted. He's mad young, 20. But, he's yet to hit above .249 in the minors. The LHP Matt Smith might be the most productive guy the Phillies get in this deal. He's turned the corner as a relief pitcher the last three seasons in the minors. Pitching to a 2.50 ERA with a WHIP of 1.30. Pitched 12 innings in the bigs this year not allowing a run.

This all hinges on the Yankees picking up Abreu's option for 2008. It's the only way he'll wave his no trade clause. However, I'm sure that's in the bag, this is like signing a free agent for them early.

According to a report on ESPN, the Phillies and the Yankees have reach a tentative deal (pending physical) to send OF Bobby Abreu to the Yankees. Here's the breakdown of the tentative trade:

The Yankees get:
OF Bobby Abreu (who is owed $13,600,000 this year and $15 million next season)
P Cory Lidle (owed $3,300,000 this year)

The Phillies gets:
SS C.J. Henry (20 year old minor league SS; Yankees first round pick back in 2005)
P Matt Smith (27 year old left-handed reliever)
A mystery minor league player from an agree-upon list

The key to the deal was Abreu will get the majority of his money from the other team, which will be the Yankees (the only team that can pay him that much). The Phillies will then immedietly clear over $37 million over the next 2 1/2 season in cap space that Abreu was supposed to be paid (now it's the Yankees responsibilites) and starting to build their farm system once again w/ Henry and adding another reliever in Smith. Lidle role w/ the Yankees is mere relief pitcher/emergency starting pitcher for the team. Abreu was brought along to help the Yankees get at least a wild card into the playoffs, now that they are in a tight race in which Sheffield and Matsui health is in question and no proven outfielder to help them. The deal also signals the end of Sheffield tenure with the Yankees, who has a team option after this season, in which the Yankees won't likely pick up (due to his injuries) so he can become a FA.

The Yanks have the deepest pockets and need to do what they always do - get an overpriced, non-pitcher at the deadline...

Abreu definitely fits the bill since they need an outfielder, so he is as good as signed. (Soriano fits the bill too, but the NYY don't want to see him again - they already shipped him out once before!)

It's possible, but they will have to take John Lieber's contract with him. He didn't do so bad in his one year in NYC before. Maybe it won't be such a bad trade afterall.

And, just after typing this I found confirmation at both ESPN and MLB.com that says he was traded to the Yanks with Cory Lidle for some minor leaguers.
