The best thing to do in my opinion is to first off adopt a wait and see attitude on these next generation systems because they are after all yet to be really tested in the real world of gamers. All the hype and claims of great technoligical leaps and advances are nothing but that, claims of greatness that have yet to be proven.
Second you should do some research into the systems to assure that you're going to get one that's going to offer you what you really desire. Take into account cost, which given the estimated retail price of these systems are extremly high end you'll want to be sure that this investment is worth it.
Third Look into the titles that will be available for the system. If you put out all that money only to find that there's just a few titles that you really want to play you might be left feeling that you wasted your money. These days a lot of the really hot titles have been coming out for more than one system. These cross platform titles can really be an added bonus that you can exploit in your favor. I myself have exercised this approach between the PS2 and the Xbox, and I'm currently investigateing the same possibilities between the original Xbox and the 360.
The final thing I'd suggest is to wait and see what the feedback on all these upcoming systems turns out to be. Once it's in the hands of the consumers we'll have a better understanding of just what the system does, what it doesn't do, and what it's worth to us as individual gamers.
Don't just rush out and buy a system on it's first day on the shelves, be patient and stay informed. If the system turns out to be the most fantastic thing since sliced bread then go for it with the knowledge that you're getting something that lives up to your expectations. If the system falls on it's face, has numerous problems, or has few if any titles you're actually going to want to play you're going to feel a lot smarter having waited and done your research.

I would suggest the Wii, once Super Smash Bros Brawl comes out, you can play it online, though if you don't like nintendo, get the Xbox 360, it'll have Halo 3 and other good games, just no motion sensing remote. I doubt you can afford a PS3 for 500$, or PS3 games for 100$ so steer away from it

i personally think that the nintendo wii would be the best choice if you are unsure because with the wii you can download games from like the snes, nes, sega genesis most of those. You also dont have to play with the wii controllers if you dont want to you can play with the gamecube controllers if you have the gamecube. Also the super smash bros for the wii will have Snake from Metal Gear Solid.

If you watch the demo video for the Nintendo Wii, it looks pretty sweet. You can fight with a sword as if you were swinging the sword and the possibilities are seemingly endless. They definitely have the right idea. The other two are just the same old systems with better graphics, the controllers aren't even really different.
