In northern Alabama, there's a town named Oneonta. There are Oneonta's in other states, as well. I have been unable to find out the origin or meaning of the name, although it sounds like it could be of Native American origin. Can anyone out there shed some light on this?

It acquired the name Oneonta in 1832. The name first applied to the creek in the East Street valley which means "place of open rocks", according to Willard Yager, the reference probably referred to the so-called table rocks overlooking lower Chestnut Street.

I believe it is a Native American name, probably Iriquois. There is an Oneonta in NY (both a city and also a county). Pretty sure its an Iriquois name.

Seneca Indians.
Many of the Senecas and Members of the Nation migrated south early in USA History.
Catawbas were another tribe who migrated.
Lenni Lenape may have also.
The aftermath of the French and Indian War and some tribes allegiance to France necessitated these moves.

The first name sounds like French or Portuguese, and I THINK it's a boy's name, though it could easily be a girl's as well. As for the second part, it definitely sounds boyish to me, though more like a last name. I would say that with the second name, it sounds more Portuguese than French.
