you are taking a chance if you have antivirus off...all it takes is one time....and you can get a nasty virus.....people put them all over the place...yesterday I was on a search engine looking up shower rod flanges...and guess what came up on the top of that page? It said 100 % free porn.....I mean REALLY!!! Be careful.

Well, strictly speaking, you only need anti-virus software on if you're running an operating system that's susceptible to viruses.. Unfortunately for some 95% of you, all Microsoft systems are susceptible by design.Properly configured Mac OS X systems are much less susceptible, and a properly set-up Linux box is almost invulnerable to viruses.

However, even an OS X or Linux system *can* still be hit with other attacks besides viruses - but a good modification-tracking package like Tripwire or AIDE will catch those. There, the problem isn't viruses, but hackers replacing software with backdoored copies. At that point, you don't care if the login program has a virus - you want to know if *any* change happened at all... Tripwire won't tell you what virus it was - only that it changed. But since the change was almost certainly a hacker and not a virus, you don't care..

Bottom line: It's necessary to have A/V on a Windows system. On other operating systems, you don't need A/V, but you *do* need other security packages instead.

I dont run antivirus at all. I have Norton Personal Firewall and it stops everything from getting in. Technically its not anti-virus cause spyware and malware are bigger threats on the internet anyways.

Not recommended but no it is not necessary as long as you are careful where you go. But then again, look at the virus that hit people visiting myspace.

You would always leave the anti virus program running. That's what it's for --to stop the virus as they enter your computer when you surf the web.

Well, it's not neccesary as such, your net connection and PC will work well enough without virus protection. It's just very risky and not adviseable.

Yes, since many sites have exploits in them or autodownloads for virii.

Unless you just plan on going to the few sites you know are safe...
