the word "a" means in this title one of many so dickens was saying that this is just one tale being told that many others exist.in fact dickens wrote many Christmas tales but this is the one we all know."Christmas" is self evident in that all the action takes place at that time of year."Carol "means a song of joy or praise, the whole story is meant for us to feel what the true sprit of Christmas is and to cherish the year through.

I'll just stretch it on this one...A carol is a way of singing songs to celebrate Christmas and wish everyone a good Xmas, right? Well the book/play by Dickens does sing praises to the Christmas spirit, and it does have the wish for a good Christmas, right?

'carols' are just another word for short stories.. so a story about Christmas would in fact be 'A Christmas Carol' .. a lot of people think that christmas carols are songs sung at christmas time.. but the truth is they are actually stories of christmas, just some have had music put to them

Here's what Dickens said about it/

I have endeavoured in this Ghostly little book, to raise the Ghost of an Idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their houses pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it.
