Yes they are for back up purposes.

Smoke detectors have batteries. The single standalones have batteries in each detector. The ones which are part of a system have a central battery supply to provide power to all of them in case of a loss of electricity.

Yes as you will need a back up if the electric powe to yur home goes out and there is a fire
