"spaghetti western" is a dismissive name for the blood-spattered Italian (or Italian-Spanish) imitations of American westerns which became popular in the 60s, using actors from many nationalities including Americans such as Lee Van Cleef and Clint Eastwood. The crews were mostly Italian, hence the "spaghetti western" reference. The films were apt to be filmed in Spain because of its resemblance to the US-Mexico border areas. The films were also more likely to feature white and Mexican characters than they were to feature American Indians. Because of the language barriers between crews and actors, the dialogue was frequently dubbed in after the film was made. One of the better known directors of these films was Sergio Leone. "Once upon a time in the west" is a classic of the genre.

They were often badly made, dubbed cowboy films made in Italy where it was much cheaper than in America. Italians eat spaghetti, ergo, Spaghetti Westerns. Famous ones include the ones by Clint Eastwood, 'The Good, The Bad and the Ugly ' and 'For a Few Dollars More'

I believe because they originated with the Italian director Sergio Leone with lots of Italians in the crew and as extras etc. I think the first was "Once upon a time in the west" with Claudia Cardinale, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards and Charles Bronson. It is the only film I know of where Henry Fonda plays a baddie.

Many were filmed in Europe because it was cheaper. Most people thought they were filmed in Italy- hence spaghetti, however, this is a misnomer as the majority were filmed in northern Spain.

Because they were produced and directed by Italians. They were filmed in desert areas of Spain, and had locals as extras.
