Maybe with their personal style; though I defiantly agree with body language. Before you speak with someone for the first time (in person) you can make crack judgments on their appearance.
-When a woman is too overdone, you wonder if she is hiding something.-If she wears too much makeup and/or is overly tan, you also wonder if they are insecure. If a woman has "let herself go" you wonder if she has sacrificed too much of herself to others and doesn't have time for herself...etc.

There really isn't a direct counterpart for the fan in today's world. I don't think eyes count, because women have always had eyes. The fan isn't really necessary any more because the restraints on women aren't as strict - if there are really any at all. Today, a woman can approach a man if she is interested or openly flirt with him, which would have been decidedly faux pas in the era that you're thinking of. It would also be considered rude to openly show anger or lack of interest in a man, where nowadays it's not that big a deal, really.

I would think a lot of women want to convey the emotion of being a "strong willed woman". Hence, we would probably use a brick, as a brick has dual usage. First, it sets up the image or message that we are NOT to be messed/tampered with. Then, if that line is crossed, we are able to throw that brick and smack the crud out of that certain someone who crossed those boundaries!
Good idea huh? ;)

Women use many different cues to show (or hide) their emotions. Choice and style of clothing is a big one. If they are eating or drinking in a social setting, watch how they play with their food or manipulate the utensils and glassware. If they are in a work setting, observe how they fiddle with their writing instrument, notebook, etc. Don't forget, body language is always the classic signal.

In which era the ladies used the above. Emotions can be through tears or laughter etc. Probably they use handkerchief to emote.

I think that these days nothing subtle like a fan would do.
Women nowadays are more likely to send forth a string of curses & swear words to get their point across.

Interesting question. My guess would be hair, at least those who have longer hair. Many ladies will twirl a section of their hair around their finger when they are interested in a guy.
