Based on 1-year use of Windows 2000 and the relatively brief period of experience with XP, I will say that I have not seen too much of a difference. In fact, most of our network computers will still be using Windows 2000. In the end, XP appears to be as fast as Win 2000. But that does not mean that everything is well with the new Bill Gates's baby! If you go to a webpage that has Java, it won't display as you would like it. You will be prompted to download the Java Virtual Machine or JVM. This Java file will put you right back into business. No matter what, the greatest benefits are that there is a common code base between the Home Edition and Professional versions. The only thing that gets on some people's nerves is that it comes equipped with the copy protection that may make reinstalls and upgrade somewhat difficult. I did not encounter any of these problems. However, a colleague did.

Windows 2000 has been the stable OS of businesses and networks and still is to this day. W2000 has the graphical user interface that is very similar to Windows 98. Windows XP is better by far from the user's perspective. It is flat out the best Operating System that Micorsoft has produced. XP comes with the same Outlook Express and Internet Explorer which have not been advanced hardly at all. Security is iffy on Internet Explorer so that is why I recommend getting XP but using Mozilla's Fire Fox as the default browser and using Mozilla's Thunderbird as the default email program. Now you have the best of both worlds. However, you must keep up to date the Security Updates that Microsoft has for XP users, so set it up for automatic notification from Micorsoft. Make sure you download the free Zone Alarm firewall. The XP firewall is limited. Don't trust it. For anti-virus, download the free Avast anti-virus program. For spyware remover download the free Adware SE from Lavasoft.
Yes w2000 is safer from a security viewpoint but XP is so much better for the user that with the suggestions made above I recommend XP.

Windows XP is not all that different from Windows 2000. Its not as secure as 2000 was, but it is more visually appealing. Microsoft constantly puts out updates everymonth trying to tie up the loose ends. It also supports better plug and play options than 2000 did. You dont need to install drivers for everything now when you plug something in. Its easier to setup home networks now too. In a nutshell, XP is 2000 in a user friendly package.

the difference between 2000 pro and xp are as follows , both are nt based and thats about it xp is straight nt and 2000 is the combination of fat , fat 32 .and nt , has the backbone of command com and active x controls .where xp is active x only
also it depends on the user and what you are use the os for.
in my opinion 2000 pro corp service pack 3 then added 4 is the most stable, all os 's have holes and need patching but the new 64 bit xp with mother board is the most stable I 've seen yet

2000 is pretty much going away and XP will follow once Vista is released. XP also recognizes different hardware much better than 2000. 2000 is geared towards business and is administrator friendly on a network.

I enjoy using 2000 alot as it very rarely crashed but these days, my XP hung and auto restart so many times that I wasn't too sure if it got much to do with the spywares, adwares etc. Nevertheless to guard against the latter, I been using the freewares concurrently namely SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition, Spy Sweeper (to block the popup) and Winpatrol and they proved pretty effective as I manage to catch alot of these malicious stuffs.
