IT IS A SAD SCENARIO BUT MANY PEOPLE ARE NOT AWARE
THAT AMERICA HAS IT'S OWN RESERVE OF OIL, THAT IF IT
WERE MADE AVAILABLE, WE WOULD BE ABLE TO PURCHASE GAS AT AROUND LETS SAY 50 CENTS PER
GALLON FOR THE NEXT 200 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUT BY USING FOREIGN OIL WE ARE FORCED TO PAY
HIGHER GAS PRICES TO THE OIL GANGSTERS THAT ARE
CONCERNED ONLY WITH THEIR POCKETS AND NOT OUR
WELL BEING!!!!!!!! THAT'S A FACT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would love this idea. Or the govt. could give us a 3-month heads up and put a full embargo on Middle Eastern oil.
Problems with this: the economy would take some really hard hits and it would further destabilize the political situation. The fact that they are depending on us for the money we spend on their oil is one of the biggest things preventing five more wars from starting.
I do stongly agree about putting more effort into alternative fuel sources. There is not enough urgency in this. I think if we had a certain amount of time to either do this or live without cars, it would become a much higher priority. Also, if the government pulled the plug on Middle-Eastern oil, gas prices would skyrocket again. If people knew that that were about to happen, things would change.
But honestly, I don't support this on the grounds of being "American" by your definition. I'm just worried about the environmental impact of continued reliance on fossil fuels.

There are hyrids out there that could be worth looking into. Honda make one at least this would cut your consumption. You might also think about car pooling by looking at a site like liftshare.org, I know it is more difficult in the states than over here in the UK, but I use my cycle to go distances of up to 30miles and the trains for longer journeys.
There is still trillions of dollars of untapped oil out there so it will be a long time yet before the world wakes up to using alt fuels. In fact your president has links with the Saudi's and makes a lot of money from their oil.

Weird question! America is not at war with the Middle East, it is engaged in certain Middle Easter countries viz Iraq, Afghanistan (more central Asia, but I will let it go) etc.
Kuwait, Saudi Arabia etc are not at war with the US. And that is where most of the Middle Eastern oil comes from.
NB: this does not mean that we should not develop alternative fuels, if only to save the environment.

Too complex. My take is that the powers that bring you gas are influencing our government and want to keep the status quo. If the middle east goes unstable to the point that gas supplies to the USA are cut back and breaks down our economy. Either of two things will happen. We will get oil from our resources or the powers that be in our oil laden government will take it by starting a war to control it. Oh! That's what they are doing anyway. Be afraid. Be very afraid!

As offended as I am by "tree-hugger", you have a point. Research shows that if we were to add 8 more oil refineries here in the u.s.a, gas prices would drop to $1 a gallon. Makes even me think-- I have always considered myself a die- hard tree hugger. But we can't go on like this, can we? Alternate means are out there, but they would radically impact the way our cars are made (smaller, lighter, not quite accident friendly). We have to make a choice.

Get real. I feel terrible filling up because of the price. If you can't handle the reality of your fuel source walk pedal or stay home. By the way, Canada doesn't refine near the capacity of oil destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

We aren't at war with the Middle East.
We aren't at war with Saudi Arabia.
We aren't at war with Iran.
No one is "dying for the black gold."
Alternative fuel concepts are being developed. It doesn't happen overnight.
If it wasn't for radical environmentalist Liberals, we could be drilling for oil in our own country, with very little effect on the environment.

Not to worry my dear friend...America is putting more money and effort into synthetic oils.... Soon enough the Arab countries will be begging for our biz... Sorry, for them it will be too late. In a way the Middle East crisis is redirecting our efforts into looking for domestic sustainable fuel sources. Bye Middle East...

Actually most of our oil comes from south america and the gulf of Mexico.
But I still don't understand why we let mid east terrorists set our prices.
