With the 3rd answer, I agree. But that said... I trust Entertainment Weekly for their reviews... though lately the reviews have been stuffed with big words and pointless comparisons that make me wonder if the critic even watched the same film I did...

I think the key part of your question is that you say 'most' movie critics. Sometimes they do miss the point because they either don't know enough about the movie, its topic, the actors/actresses or its underlying issues. This would cause them to make stupid or uneducated reviews. A lot of these people come from magazines or newspapers you have never heard of. What you can do is find a critic who has the same opinions and views of movies that you do. For me i like Roger Ebert. He is very well rounded and can see a good movie and tell a bad one through a lot of bs, while at the same time being able to enjoy a simple fun movie for what it is...a fun movie to enjoy.

Because they are psuedo intellectuals who think they are smarter than the average person and so are better able to critique a movie than we are.
