I can understand small restaurants and coffee shops only paying their staff say £5.20 an hour because thay need to survive but these supermarkets and other large companies earning 100's of millions should be forced to pay their staff better i think!

The minimum wage needs to be raised, plain and simple. Every company should be forced to pay employees a livable wage. Raising it should also not be tied in with huge giveaways for the rich which they are trying to do. These two issues have nothing to do with eachother. Yes, most of the answerers are greedy assholes...

No. The government should keep its grubby mitts out of it. When our elected officials try to increase the minimum wage, they are simply trolling for votes. The supply-and-demand for labor will set the wages where they ought to be, whether that's at $5 per hour, $10 or $20 per hour.
People who can't live on their wages have a couple choices:
Get a higher paying job
Get a second job and work more hour
Go back to school and learn a trade that pays what that person needs

The premise of your question is incorrect. The question assumes there should be government price rigging on wages. The real minimum wage is zero and government price rigging doesn't change that fact. A person without a job makes the real minimum wage, and the higher the government rigs the labor rate the more people wind up earning the real minimum wage.

I couldn't disagree more! I'm all for a better quality of life for people, but I believe that minimum wage needs to be set across the board... It should have nothing to do with how much profit a company makes! I have two companies that I own, and there is no one makeing minimum wage.... What you should be asking is "how can we help people with no skills to improve their situation so they are qualified for jobs paying more than minimum wage"

You might remember those companies with "millions" in sales might actually have smaller profit margins. Some times a company has lots of moeny in sales but actually loses money because margins are so much smaller.
Capitalism is a great thing; if a company does not pay enough people won't do the job - its that simple. Keep government out of it.

No, people do not realize the amount of taxes that companies like this have to pay, they only look at the bottom line. The more they have to pay in wages, the less people they are going to hire. You have to think about all of the consequences.

No because one million may be very little in relation to the size of the company.
