I use Windows XP Home Edition on a emachinesT3112. My ISP is Comcast (High-Speed). I use a POP3 incoming mail server and a SMTP outgoing mail server. I recently removed then added again Spybot Search & Destroy 1.4 where I purged: WildTangents, WinSoftware, WinAntiSpyware2006, Windows Security Center AntiVirus/Firewall Disable Notify (should I recover these 4 items?). I normally use McAfee Security (Personal Firewall Plus and VirusScan), should I add my IP address to the list of allowed sites? Will this make a difference, can a firewall affect my Outlook Express? My Outlook Express had been working fine for the 5 months I've had it since yesterday until after I reinstalled Spybot. I can't receive incoming messages or send messages through Outlook Express as I get this error message: An unknown TCP/IP error occurred. Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'mail.comcast.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC40**PLEASE HELP!!!**AS THE REPS HAVE NO CLUE!!!

Sounds like Spybot was installed to use Port 110.

I'd just reassign the Spybot port, or reassign the SMTP and POP3 ports.

Uninstall Spybot and see if that solves the issue. If so, you know the answer.

First check your fire wall settings. Fish around there until you see programs. Make sure your browser (Internet Explorer --Fire Fox is better) and your email (Outlook Express -- Thunderbird is better) are allowed access to Internet. That is what a firewall does, it protects from incoming and outgoing stuff. You have to let it know what you allow to go out and in.

However, rule of thumb. When a program is installed and you suddenly have a problem. No brainer; uninstall the program. When problem disappears then you know that was it.

However here is a better way and very simple.
Click Start, run your pointer up to Programs and slide it over to Accessories. From there slide it to System Tools. From there slide it to System Restore and click System Restore. Now follow the prompts. You want to restore your computer back to the day and date you know for sure everything was working. Just follow the instructions and upon reboot everything will work nicely.
