its called geneology and it's getting more and more people interested in it in Britain at the moment. Geneology is the study of the ancestors and ancestery. I'm usre that there is a Geneology club near you. My step-nan took a course in geneology and it really has given her something to do and she is really content with it. She often tells me when she digs up soemthign interesting from our or her family history. There are many website that she uses to help her, however I cannot remember any of them. So try to find a Geneology club/society near you, good luck.
