It's not mid-life crisis. I had an MG many years ago. Such fun! Don't need a car payment, but I can't stop thinking about it. ???

What you're going through is the very reason why the MX-5 exists. The original concept was to fill the 'emptiness' people in your situation had to deal with - "I have a more than reliable set of wheels, the folks taking care of my vehicle service couldn't be better, I can't remember when I Iast felt this comfortable about the way I'm managing my finances but... I still feel that there's a vehicular need or calling I'm not quite fulfilling. What to do...

Guilt is what it is. Guilt for realizing that you've taken care of your responsibilities better than you thought you could. Now you're wondering, "would it be wrong to do something nice for myself for a change? I would earn it (heck I have already!). And besides, to make it less 'sinful' I'd be willing to give up some other vice...

Yes it definitely would be a vice if you were buying it under your circumstances. And that's what the MX-5 really is. An object designed for a person that's made up his/her mind to go for the heavenly delights right here on earth. Of course here we ticket bad drivers... up there there's no speed limit. But what would be the point if every body had an MX-5 (like I hear they do in heaven).
If you like your Saturday mornings, you'll never regret buying the MX-5. The ritual full body check, the pre-run drill, engine start, rev, idle... horn check, lights, other electrical systems... body wipe and dust down, roof choice - up or down, flip a coin in your head - heads I turn left out of the drive way, tails I turn right...

Guilt is doing what you never intended to do. If you don't intend to own and enjoy an MX-5 it is the very last vehicle I'd recommend to anybody. It'll make you feel worse than getting a tattoo you don't really want - nobody ever needed a tattoo yet millions want and get them guilt free.

All the best with your quest to answering those mid-life questions.

Being 37...and if I was in your shoes I would do the following.

Keep the Camry for every day work driving, rack the miles on her, she can take it. Bad weather days, snowy days, etc use the Camry.

Now go find a used Miata or MX-5 that you like and buy it. The money you save in over all cost go out and buy items for the car that you like. New stereo, tires, wheels, wing, convertible top, new paint, whatever you want.

Now keep this toy car as just that...you toy. When you come home after work from a bad day....you will be happy to take her for a spin. Have that nice date....bring her out all shiny and clean.

To drive her daily will just bore you with her in short time. Let alone put wear and tear on her and she won't look "sharp" all the time.

I use to have a 1972 Porsche 914 for this exact reason. I was in hog heaven on nice nights, targa top off and doing 115mph down the free way jammin' to Tom Petty. Couldn't get any better at the time.

Currently seeking a new Toy but no clue what to get since I work in the industry and touch every make and model as it is.

you have a car. does it work properly. so why change cause the ash tray is full. Chrysler the leader in cup holders. Car payment so you do not have the money your car works so why do you need it? You do not. I hate to be a buzz kill but would it not be better to save the money and wait till there is a valid reason to buy another vehicle. I am one of those who is trying not to buy just cause some commercial tells me that everyone else is or it will make me a better what every.

If the Camry is running fine, keep it. You seriously like the MX-5?

i dont care what you do...just get rid of your camry, lol. anything will be more exciting than that...midlife crisis or not. if you want the mx-5, go out and buy it. it's your money, you earned it, you should spend it in a way that will make you happy.

I'd say be happy with your Camry, if it is working well.

The envornmental cost of making a new car is huge. It is better not to encourage that unless you have a good reason to.

Phantom - That's the exact wishful impulsive spending that can put you in debt. He/She has said they don't need another car payment, so why add it on when their current car runs?

Save up and buy a car when you really need one (i.e. When your 19 year old car finally hits the dirt).

Don't do that, All Mazda cars are FORD except RX-8.
Buy a Honda accord or civic or any other Toyota. Don't buy a American junk car with Japanese emblems.
