Many responses to my Bush /Cheney and and US Deficit question included the phrase "record profits." Just wondering how that answeres any part of the question. Corporations pay taxes and an increase in sales or revenue for a company traslates into more taxes for Uncle Sam. Since everyone makes profits (i.e, salary and benefits) and many people work for "corporations," how is that a bad thing?

When it means that people are freezing to death in the winter because they can no longer afford to heat their homes , there is a problem with record profits . When our elderly cannot afford to buy the medications that they need to live , there is a problem with record profits . When people are being killed for a tank of gas , there is a problem with record profits .
They could take some of those record profits and try to help some of the people that they are hurting by gouging them .

When a company like Exxon/Mobile announces record profits it makes me suspicious that they are using the current high oil prices as an excuse to gouge the consumers.

Nothing, provided you didn't screw people to achieve them. Exxon definitely screwed the average working man in order to achieve record profits.

Could you clarify please? If someone is achieving record profits selling a product that people need desperately and they're price gouging on it, that seems unethical, but if someone legitimately and ethically earns record profits, more power to them!
