Easy. You don't.
There are probably good reasons for the name... a respected relative for instance. Or maybe the parents just happen to like the name.
Whatever the case, be a friend and be supportive of their decision.

It is not your place to tell someone their child's name is lame. It is his baby, not yours. You can express your opinion, but if he is your friend, you would be better off supporting him. Have you asked him why he has chosen Norbert? Maybe he is being named after someone. Take the time to find out how he picked the name. Chances are he will be get a nickname such as Bert.

Just because you think that his name is lame doesn't mean that everyone thinks it is. Maybe Norbert is a family name, or maybe the parents just like it. There are plenty of highly successful people named Norbert.

Just give him suggestions and then slowly jump to the subject. Like I think you should name your son______ . But make sure you tell him that you are not saying Norbert is a bad name but you were just trying to give him a suggestion. If he accepts it GREAT! If he doesn't well then... he is just gonna have a son with the weirdest name ever! At least you can tell his son that you tried so he wouldn't have to have the name" Norbert". Good Luck!

pick your battles. my first thought is if your friend is not asking for your opinion, don't give it. however, if this is a good friend and you can be honest...just tell him you don't like the name---or there are others you like...or whatever. however, be prepared that it might upset him. and if you are curious--ask him why the name norbert? it could be a family name. maybe they have a cool nickname for him. or will call him by his middle name. i've heard some terrible names in my time. friends of ours named their kid fletcher. at first, we were like--HUH? now he's 2---and it works.

"That's lame"
Most likely, he's going to name him Norbert anyways, so your opinion probably doesn't mean crap to him. People don't care about what other people think, when it comes to alot of things. Especially when it comes to what they're going to call their child...

Well, you could pretend interest by asking where he came up with such a different and unique name. If he replies that he is naming his son after someone important in his life or wife's life, then you cannot say anything. If he replies that he just heard the name and liked it, then you can politely say you hope kids don't make fun of the name (i.e., calling his son 'orbit' or 'sherbert') or just say nothing.

You don't, just because you don't like it don't mean it is not a nice name. Everyone does not think the same. I think its a nice name. And your friend is smart wanting to give it a name that is not common. There are some common names that too many people have the same of.
