Demand & Supply. Nearly all diamonds are controlled by one Company in South Africa. They control the flow.

They are also unique in their hardness and beauty.

Supply and demand usually dictate value. Diamonds are rare and take thousands of years to form under the pressure of the earth's, surface.

you're mostly paying for the person who cuts the diamond. there are very few skilled jewelers so they can charge a lot for their service. there's enough raw diamond in the world that it should be very cheap but no one wants a raw diamond. they want pretty rose cuts and stuff like that. industrial diamond (used in drill bits mostly) is abundant and not terribly expensive. so you're paying for the service. not the stone itself.

And so you have diamonds that cost more than cars, and african people who get killed mining them for $4 a day.

Because they are beautiful, and rare. Although not as rare as most folks think. DeBeers strategicly stockpiles them.
