Hormones don't actually make people gain or lose weight, contrary to the popular wives tale that they do. What they can do, however, is affect a persona's appetite. Some women become more hungry, others become less. As a result, their eating habits may change, which is what causes their weight to fluctuate. But simply taking hormones added to your system doesn't automatically make you gain or lose weight.

I asked my doctor's assistant if the shot was causing all my weight gain. She said no. Then, a year later, I was still putting on the weight (up to about 20 pounds now), and I asked my doctor's nurse. She said the shot has been medically proven to put on weight and that I need to ask a nurse or a doctor, not an assistant next time I had a medical question. Also, my friends daughter put on 80 pounds and she was a teenager. I.E. the shot does not just last 3 months, sometimes, either. It took me a year to get pregnant when I stopped taking the shot and my sisters and I are the Goddesses of Fertility.

You will probably gain weight. It doesn't necessarily happen right away. You could be on it for a year or 2 before you gain anything. The average weight gain is 10 pounds per year that you are on the shot.
If you exercise and eat right you may be able to keep some of it off, but gaining weight is one of the worse side effects.

Sort of. With all birth control, there is a risk of either gaining weight or losing weight. However, keep in mind that some women experience neither! It depends on your specific reaction to the hormones in the shot...there's really no way to tell until you try it.
And I hate to contradict another answerer, but it doesn't always depend on your appetite. I know this for a fact because I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and I have to be on the pill to make my hormones regular, or else I wouldn't menstruate at all. The pill helped me lose a little weight because it brought my testosterone under control, which was contributing to my weight problem. So if your hormones aren't regulated to begin with, then the pill could affect your weight without necessarily changing your appetite. I'm sure it could affect your appetite, however.
EDIT: Believe the "certified herbalist" if you'd like to, but I know I'm right, so I really don't care what the other answerers say.

It's different for every person. Me personally I gained weight. I gained about 20 pounds in 3 months. I got off of the shot and got back on the pill. I don't gain weight while on the pill.
